b. 1954
Impressionist
John Felsing’s art is distinguished by his soft palette and impressionistic interpretation of the natural world inspired by memory and experience. Felsing has little regard for labels defining his work or technique. His artistic response to the emotion of the moment is his primary interest. While his paintings have the appearance of landscapes, to him they can also be portraits, abstractions, or music.
Felsing’s method is to not intentionally look for a painting in nature. He walks the fields near his Michigan home with an open mind and acute senses. In his own words, “I am not interested in reproducing what is visible, but in attempting to make things visible. Not until I visit a place repeatedly, do I feel enough intimacy to attempt a painting; only then does one realize that art grows out of love.”
He has lived in the same house in rural Michigan for the past twenty years in an area defined by its woodlands, farmland, open fields, numerous streams, and broad horizons. All of his paintings depict the places he sees every day intentionally or serendipitously.
