On the night of July 14, 1881, Lincoln County (NM) sheriff, Pat Garrett, and two deputies (Poe and McKinney) arrived outside the small town of Ft. Sumner, NM. They were looking for escaped outlaw, Billy the Kid. Garrett sent Poe, who was unknown in the region, up to the town of Sunnyside to inquire if anyone there had seen the Kid. Garrett and McKinney, both well known in the area, hid out in the hills. That night the men met up at a place called "La Punt de la Glorietta." Once reunited, the trio walked to Pete Maxwell's house in Ft. Sumner, hidden by the dark night. As Poe and McKinney waited outside, Garrett went in and, sitting on Pete's bed, began to ask about the whereabouts of the Kid. As they spoke, the Kid entered the room. Unable to see Garrett, the Kid walked up to Maxwell and asked who the two men were outside (Poe and McKinney.) At that momentMaxwell spoke to Garrett saying, "that's him!".....sensing the presence of a third man in the room, the Kid began to back away calling out, "QUIEN ES? QUIEN ES?" ("Who is it? Who is it?) Garrett pulled his pistol and, firing it twice, ended the Kid's short career.
