Geoffrey Gersten Strikes Again

The dust had barely settled in the art town of Altamira when word spread down the main street: Geoffrey Gersten was ridin’ back into town. And he wasn’t comin’ empty-handed.

In his saddlebag? A fresh stack of painted matchbooks, each one burnin’ with the colors of the 1940s — fonts curled like saloon smoke, hues as rare as a sunset on the high plains. Souvenirs from a vanished America, plucked from bowling alleys, soda fountains, and dimly lit bars where jukeboxes hummed like old friends.

But trouble was brewin’. Out on the fringes, imitators were lurking — quick-draw copycats with brushes loaded, eager to steal his style and claim the gold for themselves. Trouble is, Gersten’s style ain’t the kind you can rustle. It’s forged in the dust storms between Pop art and Photorealism, tempered by years of riding the long trail to internationally known artist.

At high noon, Gersten steps out onto the boardwalk, matchbook in hand, eyes steady.
“This here’s mine,” he says, thumbing the tattered edge like the handle of a well-worn Colt. “You can’t replicate this kind of history boys, not like me.”

And with that, the Matchbook Kid strikes again — a new round of works hotter than a branding iron, straight from the heart of Tempe to the walls of Altamira Fine Art in Jackson Hole.

Geoffrey Gersten is known for his vibrant paintings celebrating the beauty of bygone eras. Turning his attention to matchbooks as his subjects, his latest body of work celebrates these small, collectible gems which were once an everyday item. “I've been having so much fun collecting these little matchbooks and opening them - like discovering little, untouched packets of memories from my favorite decade.,” the artist says. The popularity of his early matchbook pieces and his limitless well of ideas inspired the artist to revive the series, creating an encore collection of these fabulous works.

Geoffrey Gersten is an internationally represented artist based in Scottsdale, Arizona.  After early success as a CAD designer for Honeywell and Boeing, he began painting professionally in 2007. A self-taught artist, his signature style developed from the confluence of abstract expressionism and photorealism.  His work explores themes of personal realization meeting popular culture. Gersten’s work has been featured in American Art Collector Magazine, Phoenix Home and Garden and The Aspen Times.
