Shadow Shift A couple of years ago I started seeing this blue VW van around the town where I live in California. I have a small obsession with painting things of this color and within a week I had tracked down the owner. She had just moved from Florida and was working as a chef for a local catering company. I explained that I would very much like to paint her van and she was kind enough to just hand me the keys, allowing me to park it wherever I wanted around town. As I started shooting photos of the van, the sun was fairly low and I noticed my shadow was creeping into some of the photos. I began trying to position my shadow more carefully to create an interesting composition in different parts of the van. Until I started painting it, I wasn’t aware of the reflection in the hubcap or the faint reflection in the upper right.
