3,500 years ago. The origin of the beautiful original language of Sanskrit. And a single word which shares the unlimited power we have within us to accomplish amazing feats of wonder.
The word “Vivek" literally translated, is “right thinking”…
In the west, we shorten this translation into “knowledge” or “wisdom.” This shortcut deprives us of the beauty and depth of the original meaning… for the original includes the query, “what do we do with the knowledge?” how do we use our wisdom?
For Collins this work is a constant beautiful challenge to use our talents in the best light, in the best way possible. To find success not just in the achievement itself, but in the beauty of helping others. Whether an individual, a lover, a country, a religion, or just the simple appreciation that knowledge gives us of how special each and every moment we have is.
This work is an ideal representation of Collins’ “Skin Horse” works… where she paints the original painting, perfect proportioned.. perfect layering…. and once it is finished, tears it apart with a hammer, chisel and sander… to recreate something far less perfect, yet somehow far more beautiful in the process….. not unlike a Phoenix rising from the ashes. It is a representation of our own lives… how the challenges, obstacles and difficulties create within us, something more powerful… more lasting… and more able to enjoy the imperfection and beauty of life.
Physically, the painting includes magical references… t
the license plate… a metaphor for how unique each one of us is…..
the number 5… representing the “five great elements” …. bhūmi (earth), ap or gala (water), teas or agni (fire), mart, vayu or pavan (air or wind) and yom or shiny (space or zero) or awash (aether or void) the word top… on a worn book cover… a child’s spinning toy… the magic of simplicity… the boy and girl in historic pages from Harpers, printed the 1860’s and touched by countless souls since…. but a few of the many magical hidden moments within the work…. We are quick to think, and as we grow in years, the wealth of information that we possess become the ultimate instrument for creating sheer beauty and delight in this world. But only if we are “right thinking” do we truly embrace all that we are capable of… Vivek.
